Thinking about our future

For millennia humans used to solve their problems and conflicts with violent physical force, whether it was to discipline a slave, a child, a clan, or another country. We still prefer to do so because it's fast and easy. Even if we lose we just will try again later. This is why we have some international or family conflicts that have lasted for decades and even centuries.

I don’t know when and how real pacifism started, I am sure the idea had been around long before Jesus Crist (2000 years ago). However, for us, modern humans, he is the father of our modern non-violent movement against physical, violent solutions for our problems. Of course, we had Gandhi (100 years ago) and Martin Luther King (about 50 years ago). So, let’s assume that the idea of nonviolent solutions for our conflicts and problems reached the masses during the last century.

Nonviolent solutions for many human problems reached such a huge population in the world that it became unlawful to beat up the wife and the kids in many countries. We banned capital punishment in many countries too. I am happy about all of these changes because I see the seedlings of the future growing within the ruins of our still violent today.

You would ask why we move into our future so slowly. I think it’s because any permanent change happens very slowly. It’s too tempting to solve the problem with violence very fast: the child didn’t listen - prohibit and enforce using the belt. It doesn’t matter, that the kid will hate you at this moment if you are lucky or forever if you are not. The solution is fast and doesn’t require any thought or creativity. They say: "My father did it and I came out fine." The fact is that we are not fine! Violence never made anything fine! We have to beg our children for forgiveness for our weakness because using physical force is always a sign of moral and ethical weakness.

When English Powers assassinated Mahatma Gandhi they made him immortal and showed the whole world that nonviolent protest against any power is more powerful than them. They just couldn't think about any other solution for their problem and they wanted it fast. When our powers killed Martin Luther King they made him immortal! Today every kid in American school, maybe in any school of the world, is learning about the power of nonviolence. Let's add to that and teach the kids the moral and ethical weakness of violence.

Nonviolence is difficult. Nonviolence is slow. Nonviolence makes 2 steps forward then goes 1 step back. However, nothing permanent is fast.

We all remember the confrontation between the oil corporations of the US and Canada against our Native American Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Dakota, in 2016. The nonviolent protest lasted through 2016. WE, the people from all over the world, sent food, clothes, money, building materials to those who did the job of nonviolent protest. Many came to Dakota to join the lines. Anyone who suggested any kind of organized violence against police was removed from the picket lines and returned to the police as a provocator. It ended only when the winter came. The Dakota climate is similar to Siberia, negative 40 degrees started in October, as I remember, and police started to pour water into the picket lines. We will not forget. They are in our common memory in spite of the fact that the pipeline is built on the Sacred Lands of Standing Rock Reservation. This story is added to the history of nonviolence. The most important is the fact that the struggle continues!

If there are so many people ready for our common nonviolent future, why do we still live in our violent present? Isn’t 2000 years enough? The answer is - obviously not. The real changes started only in the last 100 years. The process moves faster, the more people are involved, the sooner we’ll reach critical mass. Right now those with an old world mentality are in power, they own the money, they pay the salaries, they create the rules. They control governments, armies, police, and the media. They will prolong the current system as long as they can. A lot has to happen before they’ll join our nonviolent mentality. And we have to always remember that nonviolence is just the first step into our real humanitarian future.

Type 2 Diabetes after Keto

Here is a link to my first research on the topic of Type 2 Diabetes done in 2009.

During COVID 19 pandemia, while sitting at home like all of us, I decided to experiment with myself some more and tryed the Keto diet. First of all I have to say that I loved my Keto Diet. Everything the enthusiast of this diet say turned out to be true for me. Less than 3 moths later I was in ketosis. That means all my organs were getting their bio energy from fat not glucose. I did feel more energetic. I had a clearer mind and thoughts. I could take care of my dayly routine faster and better. I could focus on any given task and stay focused longer. I felt happier and at piece. I also could avoid some negative experiences that usually are related with the beginning of Keto because I added more salads and water in my everyday consumption to avoid the typical constipations. In 3 months I was 10 lb lighter. My sugar was normal with less effort. Another 3 months and I quited Keto. So you would ask me: Why?

My answer is related to my so called Type 2 Diabetes and my love for fruits. I noticed that if I ate apples my morning sugar was 10 to 20 unites higher than without apples. That means that, what they say about fruits on Keto, is also true like everything else. It also means that while in ketosis my body would prefer the fat over the glucose and free sugar was just floating in my blood unused. That was my hypothesis then and this is what continues to almost becoming my theory now.
Unfortunately, I have no idea who and where is doing diabetes research. They all are arguing about how to reduce your blood sugar either natually by proper life style or with a magic pill. I do not think anyone have a research on why and when our bodies increase or decrease our blood sugar. I noticed that my sugar is higher when I get a cold, or get nervous. It gets high in the morning but goes all the way down midday. I also noticed that sometimes after eating a cake in the evening I wake up with normal sugar while other times I go to sleep hungry and wake up with sugar elevated by 20-30 units.
There are no answers, only questions.
Today, 3 years after Keto, I eat everything. I follow only a couple of rules: I do have a small breakfast, sometimes it is just a coffee with half&half, a lot of half&half. 4-5 hours later I eat my largest meal of the day. Within 1 hour after that, I start drinking my tea often with something sweet, but it can also be just an apple, other fruits, or dry pretzels. My morning sugar is higher than my midday sugar, but I have no other symptoms, like blur vission, ot bleeding gums, or slowly healing wounds. The body works like a clock. I keep steady weight. I also walk in the woods from 2000 to 10000 steps a day.

Когда-то давно, когда я была молодая, я не понимала как это мужчина и женщина могут быть равными, если они ну ни как не равные, мамтематически очевидно. Только после жизни в штатах и знакомством с мнениями местных женщин я поняла, что равными, не биологически и не математически, а в правах перед законом. Это меня слегка примирило с феминизмом.
Я же приехала сюда из Советского Союза, а там феминизм был прямо противоположным нашему американскому феминизму. Я печатала листовки для диссидетов в начале 80х, и помню, что тема феминизма по-русски поднималась регулярно. Как тяжело женщинам работать, как им необходимо проводить больше времени с детьми и семьей дома. Очень сильно превалировало мнение, что женщинам необходимо дать возможность оставаться домашними хозяйками. Это мнение для Советского Союза было передовым, потому что за тунеядство сажали, а растить детей не очень-то работой и считалось, бабушки справлялись.
Вообще, надо сказать, что менталитет есть результат исторического развития. В России мужчин призывали в армию на 25 лет. В деревнях оставались дети и старики, ну еще инвалиды возвращались с войн, то есть вся работа оставалась на женщин. Вот и росли русские женщины все эти века такими сильными и выносливыми. Они и пахали, и косили, и урожай убирали, и детей нянчили, и дом вели. Они становились главами семей без мужчин, поэтому умели и командовать и решения принимать. Нечего удивляться почему русским женщинам так часто хочется почувствовать себя слабыми, зависимыми, почему им хочется посидеть с детьми и приготовить обед для своей семьи. Вот почему русский феминизм так отличается от феминизма в других странах.
Пока русские женщины пахали, америкарскую женщину выписывали по почте и брали в жены не глядя, запирали на ферме и тоже заставляли работать, убирать, растить детей и готовить обед, но в поле, в основном, работал мужчина. В первый раз в массовом количестве американские женщины вышли на работу, на заводы и фабрики, в 1944 году, когда мужчин призвали на вторую мировую войну. А когда мужчины с войны вернулись женщин попытались вернуть на кухню, а результатом стал воинствующий феминизм. Более интересно об этом показано в фильме с Мадонной A League of Their Own.
Почему он был воинственным? Потому что, опять же история виновата, женщинам не давали жить ни дома, где их и детей регулярно избивал муж, ни на работе, где кроме реальной работы их использовали начальники и сослуживцы в качестве сексуального расслабления от обычного рутинного стреса. Только сильные могли делать попытки к сопротивлению, но тогда они лишались работы. А про то, как в обеспечинных семьях высокопоставленный муж избивает жену после работы, всплыло только в 90х, когда я уже жила здесь. Одна за другой избитые жены из так называемых благополучных семей стали публиковать свои интервью в газетах и журналах. И вся эта правда вылезла наружу. Сколько существуют штаты, 250 лет. Ну вот 250 лет секретов и скелетов вылезли наружу в 90х, а дочери тех матерей встали за равные права на рабочем месте только в 10х годах уже этого тысячелетия.

Ну и под конец немного астрологии. Мы, человеки, вступаем в новую эру Водолея, это значит что мы все станем немного водолеями на следующие 2000 лет. Прошлая эра была эрой рыб и мы все были немножко рыбами примерно с рождества Христова. Такие ценности, как уважение к старшим сменится на уважение по заслугам, а не по возрасту или чину. "Каждый сверчек знай свой шесток" перекуется в стремление найти себя и свое счастье. Духовность будет важнее религиозности. Сильный и независимый индивидум, который сможет и за себя постоять и слабых защитить, придет на смену послушных и зависимых. How Americans Changed in 40 years

There is an opinion that our civilization is defined by the development of our technology, but the morality of people stays the same. People do not change.
I do not agree with that.
I agree that we change mu-a-a-a-uch slower than our technologies. In those thousands of years of our history we did learn to take care of each other. We care about the lives of others, not just our own. Here is a link to a quote by Margaret Mead to how she defined civilization and being civilized. So I am more in agreement with Margaret Mead than with the general opinion that our civilization is defined by the development of our technology.
However, I do understand that without technology we couldn’t take care of each other as well as we do now. I also am not a person who wants to go back to the caves in spite of the fact that I vote green when I have a chance. Here, I want to talk about just the last 40 years of our modern lives. The reference to the thousands of years back was just an illustration of how slowly the real change in our minds happens.
What happened 40 years ago? I had just moved to the United States and felt euphoria about the fact. My euphoria lasted for long enough not just because I moved out of the Soviet Union, but also because the general idea deeply brainwashed into the minds of all Americans that we are free compared to all others, affected me too.
What made me the most happy at that time was the fact that I could say whatever I was thinking and people who disagreed with my opinions had not lost any respect to me personally. That was like a breath of fresh air for a person who grew up in the society that ingrained in their souls that if you are not with us you are against us. Everyone had to think the same, was taught to have the same opinions about the facts and books, and, of course, voted the same and unanimously every time again and again.
I can’t forget how I, a new and young teacher in our very democratic New York, never had to hide the fact that I voted for republicans. They did comment, they disagreed, but they loved me anyway, even my students, young and passionate souls, listened to why I was voting differently.
Only 40 years!!!!
We still can say what we think and we often do, but the result is not the same.
Compared to the Soviet Union we still stay free, nobody will put us to jail for a different opinion. But we’ll be judged! You’ll be judged by friends, coworkers, society, and family!
It started slowly, it still is not completely ingrained, but it’s around all and each of us. Remember how families lost their members just because of different opinions about Trump? BLM?
Majority now shares the opinions of the media it follows.
I find it very interesting, I just realized, 40 years later, that it was less the power of the Soviet Union authorities, but more the power of the Soviet Union media that brainwashed us into zombies that voted unanimously.
It took us, humans, tens of thousands of years to learn to take care of one another and only 40 years to throw stones into those who think differently.
I am an optimist though, I believe that we are just taking a step backwards before we leap into our freethinking future.

About Consciousness, Crime, Punishment, and the Bible.

I was walking in the woods yesterday and thinking. This is the place and time when I am most inclined to process all my philosophical thoughts. This time I started thinking about conscience again. First of all how I would define what conscience is for me: conscience is what does not let me sleep at night forcing me to discuss with myself again and again things I did or didn’t do, said or didn’t say, what I would or should do or say differently.

Have you read “Crime and Punishment” by Dostoevski? It’s a famous detective story. A young guy killed an old woman and a detective investigates the crime. The difference is that we, the readers, know all the time who was the killer and follow his every thought and feeling. He couldn’t sleep or eat. He followed the investigator, unable to do anything else. Why didn’t he hide? Because his conscience was punishing him. This was the idea Dostoevski wanted to bring up to us. We often do not need the punishment from society, we punish ourselves harder.

I remember once we discussed this with my husband, he told me that he would never kill somebody just because he couldn’t do that, but he did not steal things only because he didn’t want to end up in jail. I thought of that and at the moment I decided that I would neither kill nor steal just because, that was it. How little I knew myself then. I did kill a mouse just a few years later with my own hands. We lived on an Island in a tent and the mouse got into our bread eating the last slice. I was hitting and hitting this little thing with my slipper even when it was already dead. As you can see my conscience is still reminding me about the event.

I realized that this conversation was about conscience later. It is different for different people. Some will not sleep at night because they were rude to someone, others will lose sleep only if another was rude to them. However, we, as society, force each other to behave in a specific way to make our common life bearable and to avoid conflicts caused by differences in opinions of our individual consciences.

If only we could bring up our children so they could recognize when their conscience (not their friends) talks to them and learn to listen to its suffering.

Very recently I have realized that the Bible is the book written to teach us to talk to our conscience. Maybe, the Old Testament less, but the entire New Testament is only about that.

I want to use one very widely spread example: here is the cite from the Bible “Judge not, that ye be not judged.” and a very common explanation from google: “Given the close connection between ethics and eschatology in Jesus's teachings, Tertullian concluded that the command to “judge not” is a reminder to us that judgment and punishment are not ours to mete, but God's.” Is this possible? Is this reasonable? Why would we wait our whole life to be judged? No way. The judgment and the punishment come right away in a form of your own conscience. And for those who don’t feel it, we, as a society, have a well defined system of police, courts, and jails. There is nothing we do in this system that works against the Bible because the Bible, at least the New Testament, talks to you personally, not to the whole society. You, personally, stop judging others for what they do or say, mind your own business. More accurately worded would be: I should not judge others for what they say or do, I should mind my own business, you do whatever is legal and it’s not my business.

Опять по-русски: О чем BLM?

Я уже пробовала писать про американское движение сопротивления против несправедливостей происходящих не когда-то в истории, а сегодня, но похоже недостаточно ясно излагаю. Надо повторить с новыми деталями и новыми историческими справками.

Вот здесь мое любимое выступление одного нашего комика про BLM. У него самая лучшая формулировка всей проблемы, но так как каждое слово важно и имеет значение, человеку, который учится понимать английский, очень полезно пересмотреть это несколько раз. У Майкла очень хорошая дикция и он реально проговаривает все слова.

Вот о чем он говорит:
во-первых, наступили времена, когда мы, люди, ни о чем не можем поговорить и ни в чем согласиться. Например, если ты с BLM, значит ты против полиции, что совершенно не логично и не правильно. Другой пример, если мы говорим, что жизни черных имеют значение, это совершенно не тоже самое, что сказать остальные жизни значения не имеют. Никакой логики в таких обвинениях нет.
во-вторых, он сравнивает BLM с другими движениями, которые боролись за равные права. Смешно то, что нашим черным сейчас не до их равных прав, им надо просто выжить, потому что полиция, главная функция которой должна быть защита гражданского населеня, убивает черных мужчин, женщин и детей, на улице, в машинах и даже в их домах.
в-третьих, он вспоминает историю сопротивления черных в Америке и говорит, что они боролись за цивильные права, а не за равные права. Смешно потому, что как и в русском слово цивильные означает не только гражданские, но и приличные, культурные. Опять же черным не до гражданских прав, просто хочется, чтобы с тобой обращались прилично. В 50 и 60 годы в США, когда движение за гражданские права черных было на пике, черных за людей не считали, их линчевали и вешали вдоль дорог, где они и висели на съедение птиц.
Четвертое, ... стоп, я пока поговорю о другом.

Вот о чем: Colin Kaepernick’s protest 2016.

Видимо в России не знают, что один наш очень знаменитый игрок в американский футбол вместо того, чтобы стоя приложить руку к сердцу во время исполнения государственного гимна, встал на одно колено и простоял так все время пока играли гимн. Он объяснил, что не мог больше молчать по-поводу убийств черных полицейскими и прочими проблемами в стране, включая несправедливые войны, которые мы ведем по всему миру. Скандал разразился кошмарный, но когда Колина выгнали из его команды, футболисты пачками стали становиться на одно колено, и белые, и черные, вместе стояли на одном колене во время исполнения государственного гимна.

Эту же форму протеста выбрали и участники Движения Жизнь Черных Значима, они еще добавили поднятый вверз кулак. Это Движение не против рассизма, в том определении, к которому мы все так привыкли. Это Движение за сохранение жизней.

Как видите люди стоят на одном колене, белые и черные, вместе, а не друг перед другом. Никто никому сапоги не целует. Мы стояли так многотысячными толпами, во всех 50 штатах, а еще кое-где в Европе и Австралии. Вес мир восстал против бесчеловечного обращания государства со своими людьми.

Теперь о том, почему Флойд. Дело не в нем и не о нем. Флойд стал последней каплей. Народ восстал именно потому, что мы больше не могли выносить почти еженедельных, а иногда ежедневных, сообщений, как еще в одном штате, еще один полицейский убил еще одного черного. Это длилось годами и наконец стало невыносимым. Кроме того нас потряс садизм и ценизм с которыми это убийство было совершено, среди бела дня, на глазах людей, коленом удушил живого человека. Это не полицейский, не человек, а выродок, и я рада что его приговорили, в отличии от всех предыдущих убийств, где полицейских оправдывали.

В заключение я покажу вам еще одно выступление еще одного комика, Dave Chappelle, он очень знаменит. Его любят и черные, и белые. Его юмор горубоват, но он не боится издеваться ни над черными, ни над белыми. В июне 2020 он выступил со своими мыслями по поводу убийства Флойда, протестов и других сопутствующих событий. Обычно он очень смешной и кое-кто в там посмеивался, но я воспринимаю это выступление Шопела как гражданский протест. К концу я прлакала.

Ну главное, конечно, я же не говорю, что у нас все в порядке. Нас много и мы все разные. Кто-то поджигал мусорные ящики, а кто-то выносил из магазинов барахло. В Нью Йорке до сих пор стрельбы больше чем среднестатистической до того. В основном, это подняли голову разные банды и пользуются моментом.

Нужно смотреть в суть дела: ничто не сравниться с мирной толпой единодушных протестующих, без провокаций, без насилия, громко выражающей свое недовольство.

А штатов 50, и протесты проходили не по штатам, а по городам и деревням, без перерыва, в течение месяца и даже больше. Именно поэтому и начались реформы полиции в большинстве штатов, именно по этому и поменяли законы о том как вести записи по убийствам полицейскими американских граждан. Эти перемены начали происходить сразу, уже в июне 2020. Это был не очередной анти-рассисткий бунт черных против белых, это американский народ встал против вопиющей несправедливости.

Mob Mentality, past and future

If you’ve ever read the Old Testament you might ran into the following statement: “If you are with majority, stop and think whether you are right”

When I was young and read this for the first time, I could only think of one situation, life in the country I was born, where everyone had to think the same. At the meetings we all had to vote the same. In literature class we all had to repeat after the teacher what to think about the books we read. I learned to say “We” long before I learned to say “I”. We think, we believe, we judge, instead of I think, I believe, I decide.

It took me a long time to realize that the Bible talks to me, to my soul, not to us. It also does not mean that if you are with minority, you are always right. Each of us has to discover their own lessons in every statement. That particular statement says “Stop, Think for yourself, and then act”, make up your mind, if you follow the majority, they may take you somewhere you don’t really want to be.

Another example of the Bible statement that talks to you and asks your soul, says “Do not judge and you won’t be judged”. It is not a protest against our legislative system, courts are the best places to peacefully solve your unsolvable problems. Again it tells you to stop and think before you start talking about other people faults and spreading the rumors. This one is against gossiping and badmouthing others and taking care of your own faults.

The Bible teaches you how to listen to your conscience and subconscience in decision making and not follow the majority or even someone else. This is hard! It is so much easier to just agree with your classmates when you are at school together bullying one person. It is so much easier to vote like everyone around you instead of speaking up your own opinion. It is especially hard to recognize if you have your own opinion when your entire life they taught you to respect elders, authority, your teachers. It is really scary to say something against a crowd of screaming mob. Bullying scars kids’ souls, fear to say what you think destroys your soul, and participating in a mob act may make you a murderer. This is why The Bible warns you to listen to yourself and not others.

The next step in thinking about mobs brings you back to my childhood and to the country I was growing up in. It was not Hitler who created fascism, it was a crowd of Germans yelling “Hile Hitler!”. It was not Stalin who built the totalitarian Soviet Union, that was done by crowds of soviet people who voted unanimously in every election and selection because we were too scared to speak up against the crowd.

Now we live in virtual world, but it became even easier to join the crowd. Each of us finds the crowd to join and together hate the other crowds. Instead of learning how to speak up and discuss different views, which is still very hard, we just find others who agree with our thoughts, which is easy and pleasurable.

Modern technology helped us to hate instead of to love our neighbor.

We are judging left and right, gossiping about other people opinions. We completely unlearned to listen to different points of view, instead we judge them. We mixed up facts and opinions and often we believe in opinions and call facts fake news. It seems again and again that tecnology does not make us better humans.

Мы выехали из СССР в конце 1984. Союз уже совсем разваливался на ладан дышал. Уже через 2 месяца пришел Горбачев и началась гласность. Фильм Кин Дза Дза был снят именно в этот момент. Я смотрела этот фильм в первый раз в 1989. Тогда я его смотреть не могла, с одной стороны слишком абстрактно, а с другой слишком депрессивно. Тогда я не получила никакого удовольстия. Прошло 35 лет, вчера я пересмотрела его опять и все стало на свои места.

Данелия дорвался до свободы слова, он показал в этом фильме как большая часть советской интеллигенции видела мир: Планета Плюк это загнивающий Союз, а планета Альфа это процветающий запад, который и судит, и приговаривает, и спасает и все за всех знает.

В Союзе были хорошие люди, как наши главные герои, дядя Вова и Скрипач, чистые, смелые, честные, добрые, находчивые, верные, такие которые могут и посмеяться и пошутить, и поработать, и смекнуть, где работать не надо. Мы все себя узнаем в этих двух замечательных ребятах. Нам совсем не хочется себя узнавать в героях Яковлева и Леонова, а они-то тоже мы, только мы изуродованные теми условиями нашего сущетвования в Союзе, которые научили нас не говорить и не думать правду. Наративные слова всего фильма произносит девушка на 55-ой минуте "Какой Дурак на Плюке правду думает?" Мы с молоком матери впитали, что надо говорить, а о чем даже и думать не стоит.

Да, Планета Плюк - это Союз, проржавевший, скрипучий, песочек сыплется. Власть слабая, старикашка в ванной играет, люди сами эту власть поддерживают своим стремлением получить желтые штаны. Правда государственный аппарат еще как-то работает, вон как быстро и планету нашли и по телефону дали поговорить. Зато оружие на высоте и ракеты летают.

Конечно, главная проблема - это люди, люди, которые врут, предают, воруют, дают и берут взятки и крутятся, суетятся, лезут в превелигерованное сословие. На планете Альфа есть решение - перерабатывать их в цветы. А вот наши главные герои считают, что их еще можно спасти, и похоже Данелия с ними. Он показал, что Уеф и Би отправили Вову и Скрипача на Альфу пожертвовав собой, значит надежда есть. Только неизвестно сколько поколений должно пройти пока мы все людьми станем.
